YOUR ASSIGNMENT

Create a self-portrait using reflections or shadows, making yourself part of the environment rather than the sole subject. Produce 3–5 images where you are embedded in your surroundings, capturing context, light, and atmosphere along with your own presence.

Your series should include:
• Reflections in mirrors, windows, puddles, or shiny surfaces
• Shadows cast on walls, streets, or floors acting as your silhouette
• Interaction between yourself and the surrounding environment — architecture, objects, textures
• Attention to composition, perspective, and framing that integrates you naturally into the scene

This assignment encourages you to explore self-representation creatively, while highlighting the environment you inhabit.

ENCOURAGING CONSIDERATION

– Find good light. Position yourself in soft, directional, or dramatic light to create depth and highlight your presence in the scene.

– Use the environment. Incorporate surrounding elements — walls, arches, textures, colors — to contextualize your selfie, making it more than just a portrait.

– Experiment with reflections. Windows, mirrors, polished surfaces, or even puddles can add layers and interesting distortions.

– Play with shadows. A strong shadow can serve as a minimalist selfie, showing shape, gesture, and interaction with light.

– Consider perspective. Shoot from above, below, or at an angle to integrate yourself dynamically into the environment.

– Blend with surroundings. Your presence should feel naturally connected to the scene; the environment should enhance your portrait, not compete with it.
• Be creative and playful. This assignment is as much about exploration and experimentation as it is about capturing your image.
