YOUR ASSIGNMENT

Focus on the curves and arches of gates, doorways, and architectural details in the Medina. Create 6–10 images that explore repetition, scale, and rhythm by combining large arches with smaller ones or capturing segments of arches to create abstract or graphic compositions.

Your series should include:
• Full arches emphasizing symmetry and proportion
• Smaller arches framed within larger arches
• Partial arches or segments that create patterns or abstract shapes
• Compositions where arches lead the eye or create visual pathways
• Attention to light and shadow that defines curves and depth

This assignment encourages you to see architecture not just as functional structures but as sculptural and visual forms.

ENCOURAGING CONSIDERATION

– Look for repetition and layering. Many doors, windows, and gates in Marrakech create natural nested shapes — use this to build rhythm in your images.

– Play with perspective. Shoot straight-on for symmetry, from the side for depth, or from low/high angles to emphasize scale and curvature.

– Focus on segments. A partial arch, a cropped curve, or an overlapping shadow can transform a literal structure into an abstract composition.

– Use light to sculpt form. Directional sunlight can emphasize depth, texture, and contours of stone or plaster surfaces.

– Combine human or environmental elements subtly. Shadows, textures, or small figures within the arches can add context without distracting from the architectural form.

– Simplify and frame. Isolate curves to highlight shape and rhythm — avoid clutter that competes with the elegance of the lines.
• Experiment with patterns. Repeated arches, overlapping shadows, and intersecting curves can turn everyday architecture into dynamic, artistic imagery.
